Hard Stains

Follow 4 steps: (1) name the stain → (2) grade Intensity → (3) grade Coverage → (4) read the matrix.

Step 1 — Name the stain

Stain

Group

How it looks

Where you see it

Grease & Oil

A

Sticky brown / black oil and smoke layer, burnt crust

Chimney, hob, tiles behind stove, exhaust fan

Rust

A

Orange / brown marks on metal, rust rings

Stove, chimney, sink edge, fridge, cabinet baskets

Fungus

A

Black / green / grey mould spots

Fridge gasket, grout, sink cabinet, damp walls

Yellowing

A

Surface turned yellow / brown with age or heat

Fridge body & gasket, switchboards, white tiles

Water

B

White chalky rings / spots, scaling

Sink, taps, slab near sink, tiles

Ink

B

Pen / marker marks

Cabinets, fridge door, walls

Cement

B

White cement / plaster splashes or lumps

Tiles line, sinks, windows

Paint

B

Paint drips, dots, splashes

Tiles, glass, window grills, slab

Step 2 — Grade Intensity (Low / High)

Intensity = how deep the stain is. Mark High only if you can see one of these signs. If you cannot see any of them, it is Low.

Sign

Name

What you must see

I1

Surface hidden

You cannot see the surface under the stain (colour / shine / pattern hidden).

I2

Thick / raised layer

Crust, thick sticky grease, raised scaling, cement or paint lumps.

I3

Surface eaten / soaked

Rust flaking or with holes; fungus inside grout or gasket; paint / ink soaked into stone.

I4

Scrub does not work

Partner scrubs on video with the right chemical and nothing changes.

Step 3 — Grade Coverage (Low / High)

Coverage = how much area is stained. Mark High only if one of these is true, otherwise Low:

Sign

What you must see

C1

Stain covers more than half of the item (e.g. more than half the chimney, more than half the wall behind the hob).

C2

Stain is on 3 or more items (e.g. chimney + hob + tiles).

Step 4 — Decision matrix

Group A (AND): Not Doable only when Intensity AND Coverage are both High.
